Every month we will be doing an Arcade Pony artists' feature, giving you up to date info from our line up of great musicians. This month we're doing Krucy Darkstar - 19 year old DJ and producer from Buckinhamshire.

Krucy Darkstar

Krucy started making music at the young age of 12, making happy hardcore and gabba before eventually moving into the electro field. He originally started using iMovie to mash up tunes before progressing to Garage Band. One of his earliest endeavors was to mix a Tupac accapella with the theme from 'Assault On Precinct 13'. Krucy has recently been studying at SAE London and is based in Hackney. When playing out live, he's been known to use Ableton with the APC40 controller, putting him at the cutting edge of DJ technology.

Arveene and Misk remix competition winners Dogmen interview

As you know a while back Arcade Pony and Discobelle ran a competition giving anyone the chance to remix the latest release from Arveene and Misk 10K Favour. Recently, the winner was announced as the brilliant Italian duo Dogmen. We caught up with them to find out what they do and who they are.

1) Congratulations on winning the Arveene & Misk remix competition, what does winning mean for you?

Thanks! It means a lot because it's a great opportunity to show off our music and because of the caliber of the people involved. Arveene and Misk are both top notch producers, Arcade Pony is an excellent label, and the people at Discobelle are running an awesome blog - it's an honor to be part of this.

2) How did you hear about the competition?

Through Discobelle. They posted the competition details in their blog and we were interested straight away.

3) Is your remix of 10K Favour your first release?

Yes, it is.

4) How do you feel about Arcade Pony signing you to the label?

We're happy about it, it's a huge opportunity. Everyone has been extremely cool with us, and we look forward to seeing how our work will be received: we're bringing some different vibes to the label, and it's always interesting when different styles come together.

5) Do you play out live much?

Not really, we spend a lot more time in the studio. We went through some changes recently, Greg relocated to Milan, while Tommy stayed back in Pavia. This past year was a "preparation" period for big things to come, and hopefully it's starting to pay off. Through the birth of RUN BVS we have some very cool projects coming up, one of them being a regular night called Please Please Please at Sacrestia in Milan. So right now we're preparing for a longer run of DJ sets.

6) How would you describe your style as artists?

It's hard to find the words. We're not against labeling music, we just have no idea what to call ours! It's somewhere between techno, tropical and house, with a major focus on throbbing bass and catchy melodies. So, to quote Botnek, Technopical Basshouse?

7) Where do you hope winning the comp will take you?

We hope we will get opportunities to be more heard. It's hard to get people's attention, and even harder to involve them, both those who organize and the public.

8) Where do you see yourselves in a year's time?

Possibly DJing in a sweaty club wearing nothing but caribbean-themed underpants. And we want to release our debut EP and get more gigs out and about.

9) You guys used to be called Dogma, what prompted you to change to Dogmen?

Well, the origin of the first name dates back to high school times. We changed it because of marketing and legal reasons: there are at least a million metal groups called Dogma, and already quite a few electronic acts with a similar name. Dogmen appealed to us because it reconnects with the old name and gives us the chance of refreshing our image and our style. It's an empty container ready to be filled!

10)Have you been getting a lot of press for winning the competition?

Not very much.

11)Have there been any big names hyping you up?

Not yet.

12)How long have you guys been making music?

Greg's been making music on his computer for about 5 years, and he played in a band before that. Tommy got into it about 3 years ago when Dogma started.

13)What inspires you during your creative process?

Our creative process is usually not straightforward, but it always gets to the point where we are on a roll, where things just fit. We get inspiration from movies, or music we listen to while we're relaxing in the studio. One of us might come up with a little melody or drum fill, and we work from there, adding things as we see fit. Sometimes, we lay down certain rules, and that's what happened while we were remixing 10 K Favour: it had to have a flute with an oriental feel to it. That gets our creative juices flowing, because it gives us a clear direction.

14)What do you take influence from?

Firstly, other musicians. We have lots of respect for those electronic musicians we consider game-changers, people who are creative enough to take things to the next level. We both listen to all kinds of music, so that influences us constantly. We are also influenced by artists and designers we consider ingenious, and obviously by the inspiring people - music related or not - we meet during our everyday lives.

15)What's on your playlist at the moment?

Canblaster's "Totem EP" and generally lots of stuff by the Club Cheval guys - they are taking things forward at such an incredible pace. So this weekend just gone was really busy for Arcade Pony Records with us hitting up Electrikk Chair in Bournemouth, where Tom Dubyes, Punx Soundcheck (John Taylor) and Stuff Ya Disco played blinding sets of the hardest, darkest electro house/dubstep around.

Electrikk Chair is a brilliant night with a great atmosphere - I strongly suggest everyone who loves dancing to amazing music with great people to check it out. Even if you're from outside of Bournemouth, it's definitely worth the drive.

On Saturday, we headed down to the Playground @ KOKO for a loud night of electro vs dubstep fun with Steve Aoki, Does It Offend You Yeah?, Modestep and Punx Soundcheck.

Modestep tore through an extremely heavy set, keeping the crowd hyped with an MC and dropping tune after tune of dubby messiness. Next, Does It Offend You Yeah? took to the stage with their show of electro-induced indie rock, playing a great cover of Aneurysm by Nirvana, which has become a regular fixure in their live sets. Finally, Steve Aoki wowed the crowd with his brand of electro house, spraying them with champagne and playing old tracks as well as some from his upcoming album.

All in all an amazing weekend with great music and wonderful people.

Where are you coming from musically, Adam? What are your roots??

I've been interested in dance music from a young age I think mainly from listening to my dads old Altern8 and KLF tapes when i was about 10 years old, I'd never heard anything like it, it was a revolution. Also playing around with reel 2 reel players, slowing down and speeding up music on these things is very fun as a kid!

What are you talking about, Willis?

First off I'm not Willis but if I was I'd probably be talking about mynext release 'The Witching hour' which is a certified banger, especially with a remix from the amazing Punx Soundcheck!

Why do you do what you do?

Because its way too fun! Recently I've made a new band called Meteors which is a 3 piece from Southend, half live half electronic, its all VERY exciting to be making something genuinely different. Watch this space...

What do you think of the state of the industry right now?

In some ways its amazing at the moment with artists really pushing the boundaries like sebastiAn and SBTRKT both pushing in different ways but musically brilliant. I don't like the fact that every song HAS to have a dubstep remix now, I love some dubstep but theres 90% generic wob wob thats the same as the other 1000 wob wob tracks, give me a good melody over that anyday! The charts are full of cheesy dance beats at the moment, but if thats a leg up for kids to start delving deeper into dance music I can't knock it too much.

What is exciting you musically right now?

As already mentioned SBTRKT is a big fave at the moment and The 2 Bears for their real classic house sound, but i also listen to a lot of different stuff like Metronomy (album of the year for me), also new Tom Vek album is killer.

Where do you see things going for yourself over the next couple of years?

Hopefully a lot more dj gigs and produtions coming out, I feel my productions are just getting better and better so i'm very excited to finish of some new tracks, maybe put together a mini album. I've had such good feedback from massive artists like Fatboy Slim and Soulwax I think i must have accidentally done something right! We also hope to also have a Meteors album finished by the end of the year!

You can catch me every monday for Monday Funday at The Sunrooms Southend aswell as Mish Mash 26th august at The Royal Hotel. We have our debut Meteors gig at The Dirty South in Lewisham on 13th August where i am also finishing the night off with a dj set straight after our show. Busy busy....

Punx Soundcheck @ Glitch - Southend

Thursday the 28th saw our boys Punx Soundcheck (John Taylor and RE:RAW) hit Southend on Sea. Playing @ Glitch in the very plush nightclub Talk, they tore through an extremely hard set bursting with energy. The large crowd - of what I can only assume were the locals - all looking like they were bred to kick the shit out of each other but going mental for the big tunes had a banging time. The girls in their tight dresses and orange skin were dancing like crazy. The drinks were flowing and everyone was having a great time. The set by Punx Soundcheck was banging and I think the crowd got a kick up the arse as soon as the first tune dropped.

Glitch is a cool night so get down there if you're in Southend-on-Sea - it's every Thursday.
